0BL-V1 + The Accomplice
A character-driven narrative study focusing on the duality of intent. This project uses experimental photography and textured digital art to explore a complex story through visual cues and atmospheric composition.
The Story
0BL-V1 began as a deep dive into character design for PowrPlay, serving as an exercise in exploring fluidity and intent. The core concept was to build a figure with an identity that resists easy categorization, existing simultaneously as a superhero, a villain, or an anti-hero depending on the viewer’s perspective. Driven by a desire to end suffering at any cost, the character acts as a last-resort force in his world. He is powered by a luminous green stone embedded in his back, which serves as both his source of strength and the focal point of his physical design. Beside him, The Accomplice acts as a companion figure and an essential emotional anchor, grounding the character in a sense of loyalty and humanity.
The Foundation
I approached this project through experimental Photoshop photobashing techniques to build the physical form. The foundation of the visual language relies on contrast between the character's rugged, mechanical appearance and the ethereal glow of his power source. I wanted to create a sense of scale and presence, ensuring that even in static imagery, the character felt kinetic and burdened by his purpose. By layering textures and balancing light against shadow, I was able to build a silhouette that feels both alien and grounded in a recognizable, gritty reality.
Design Decisions
A major part of the creative process was defining how The Accomplice would complement the main character. Inspired by the personality of my own cat, I designed this companion to act as a silent, watchful observer. This dynamic allowed me to explore the theme of purpose versus perception, as the relationship between the two figures changes how the audience interprets 0BL-V1. I also focused heavily on environmental storytelling in the compositions, using specific lighting cues and atmospheric effects to convey the weight of the character’s mission without needing a single word of exposition.
The Final Look
The project concluded with the production of a high-impact character poster and a collectible playing card design. These pieces serve to encapsulate the essence of the duo, providing a window into their world and their shared history. Working on this project was a refreshing challenge, as it moved me away from traditional branding and into the realm of character-driven narrative design, allowing me to focus on how visual cues can tell an entire story without any corporate context or regulatory constraints.
